What is zakat?

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam. Every Muslim who owns wealth at or above the nisab threshold must give one-fortieth (2.5%) of it to those in need. You may give your zakat to our foundation; it is used for the students we educate.

Goods you hold for the purpose of selling are subject to zakat:

  • Shop and warehouse stock
  • Real estate held for sale
  • Raw materials
  • Trade receivables

Items for personal use, such as your home or car, are not subject to zakat.

Who must pay zakat?

A sane, adult Muslim who owns wealth at or above the nisab and has held it for a full lunar year (hawl).

What is the nisab?

The nisab is the minimum amount of wealth at which zakat becomes obligatory: the value of 80.18 grams of gold or 561 grams of silver. Today the gold nisab is used.

How much zakat is due?

One-fortieth (2.5%) of net wealth above the nisab.

Who can receive zakat?

The eight categories named in the Qur’an (At-Tawbah, 9:60): the poor, the needy, zakat administrators, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, those in bondage, debtors, those in the cause of Allah, and the stranded traveler.

How is the zakat I give to the foundation used?

Zakat given to our foundation is spent on the madrasa students we educate.
