What Is Zakat? The Ruling on Zakat

Those considered wealthy in religion are obliged to pay set proportions of each of their savings, whether cash, trade goods, livestock, or grain and produce, to those considered in need. Allah the Exalted made zakat obligatory upon those considered wealthy, and declared in the Holy Qur'an, in verse 110 of Surat al-Baqarah, that those who fulfill this command will find their wealth increased. Through zakat, one's property is purified, blessed, and multiplied. Those who are careful about zakat are praised in the Qur'an and the noble hadiths, and will be called especially from the gate of zakat in Paradise.

Who Can Receive Zakat? Can Students Receive Zakat?

The phrase "in the way of Allah," mentioned in the Qur'an among those eligible for zakat, also covers students of knowledge. Starting from this, jurists have strongly emphasized looking after students of knowledge through zakat. Zakat given to a student of knowledge contributes to his education, and the giver shares in the rewards of the service he will render until the end of his life, and even in the rewards he continues to earn after his death through the students he trains and the works he authors.
